All About Quinoa

Quinoa, which is pronounced keen-wah, is an ancient food that is super healthy, a powerful superfood that every vegetarian and vegan has in their pantry.  We think of quinoa as a grain, however it really is not a grain!  Quinoa is closely related to beets and spinach!

Quinoa's nutritional profile is nothing short of Amazing.  All of the essential amino acids are present in quinoa, which makes this food a complete plant protein that is incredible for building lean muscle (or losing weight)!  Manganese, magnesium, iron, copper, and phosphorus are nutrients that are present which means quinoa is great for helping migraine headaches and a food that is linked to heart health.  Quinoa is so high in fiber that it is great for your entire digestive system and I'm just waiting for science to link eating quinoa to low colon cancer risk.  It certainly has the potential to wear such a label.

Preparing Quinoa

Now down to the gritty details of how to eat quinoa.  Quinoa needs to be rinsed before you cook it.  Do not skip this step!  Quinoa has saponins, which are a protective, bitter coating.  These saponins will prevent a person from digesting the quinoa properly.... so RINSE until the water runs clear.  Very Important!

Just 1/2 cup of quinoa fills the daily protein necessities for a child!  Getting lean protein has never been easier.... check out the recipes below!  (I personally do a quinoa-granola every morning..... GREAT way to start the day and my kids LOVE it!)

Quinoa isn't just for salads........

Quinoa Berry Crunch
Curried Quinoa
Quinoa Pudding
Quinoa Burgers
Quinoa Muffins

Quinoa is a versatile food for vegetarians. I have used it in lieu of rice in some recipes. It seems to becoming more available these days. Ive even seen quinoa based pasta at my local organic market.

I've been looking into this more closely and cannot wait to try it. My problem is I live way out in the sticks (literally), and it takes me an hour to get to any health food stores.

Thanks for sharing.
