I don't use chemical cleaning products, on anything. I don't use chemicals on my animals to prevent or kill fleas. We use all natural methods which work (in my opinion) better than store bought products.
Anyone who has ever had a flea problem in the house knows it is a Serious pain in the rear. My first and last flea problem was 7 years ago while I was pregnant with my son.
The best way and most affordable way to kill fleas (or prevent fleas from ever hatching) is simple, natural, and leaves your home smelling incredible.
I make a rug powder, keep it in an old spaghetti sauce jar that I hammered holes in the top of to spread evenly on my rugs and carpeted areas. My favorite rug powder recipe is as follows:
2 Cups Borax (Laundry boost in your detergent isle and is very affordable)
1 Cup Sea Salt (I purchase this in the bins for 29 cents a pound)
1 Teaspoon of Lavender Essential Oil
I put them all in a bowl, breaking up all clumps and pour into my spaghetti jar and shake it up (covering holes) to mix the lavender oil throughout the mix. Then, I shake on carpets, leave overnight, and vacuum the next morning.
This can be used on upholstered furniture, on mattresses (I love it!), and anything else you can vacuum.
You may be asking.... how does it kill fleas naturally? Both borax and salt eat away at little creepy crawly eggs and legs while remaining harmless to humans and animals. The essential oil just makes your house smell incredible while you prevent a flea invasion or kill an army that chose to ride in. Choose an essential oil that you love the scent of!
On mattresses, the same principle applies to dust mites. Kill dust mites naturally with this same recipe and vacuum them off. You should vacuum your mattresses once a month to keep them mite free and use a little herbal magic to keep you and your surroundings healthy!
I'll be sharing some of my other favorite natural cleaning methods so stay tuned!

I am SO doing this! we recently moved in with a neighbor and we now have a total of 6 dogs and 6 kids living in one house... to say the smells get overwhelming would not be an exaggeration! Thanks for your tip. I already use the borax as my laundry detergent anyway so I have lots in stock. ;)
