She furthered explained that she hears the terms used in the media, but it has been one of those subjects that she has glazed over, nodding her head without really understanding it. She always figured if the food was on the shelf for sale, it must be safe, right?
Unfortunately, no. That is not the truth. Not all foods are created equal.
I am writing a series on GMO foods starting with this post answering what GMOs are. I'm going to attempt to explain this is in a simple way so that there is no need to glaze over this very important information any longer. (To click ahead to the second post on GMOs click here.)
GMO stands for: Genetically Modified Organisms. GE stands for: Genetically Engineered.
There are only a few foods that are GMOs. The FDA and USDA have approved scientific engineering on some foods. If you are asking, "So What?" I'm here to tell you why this is such a big deal.
Monsanto, the biggest seed company in our country, has fed our FDA and USDA with propaganda that they can *feed the world* with their genetically modified version of real seed through their lobbyists in Washington. While Monsanto feeds the public with their *safe mutated* seed, some countries have banned GMO seeds altogether. Haiti, after their recent earthquakes, being one of the countries that initiated a burn of GMO seed!
If these seeds are so safe and sound to consume, why are other parts of the world banning GMOs and burning the seeds that Monsanto gave them?
This is why:
1. There are studies indicating GMOs caused serious health problems to tested rats.
2. GMOs are not regulated like natural foods.
There are a host of other reasons that you can find at Say No to GMOs!
Children are at the greatest risk of all when exposed to GMOs. With this series of posts, you will know what GMO foods are, what ingredients GMOs are disguised as, and what YOU can do about this horrible travesty to our food system.
Now you may be asking: WHY? Why would anyone do this?
There was a day in the grain belt when a farmer could harvest his own seed to replant the next year. Monsanto and their GMO seeds have special patents that require a farmer to purchase new seed every year because of possible cross pollination. In short, Monsanto sues farmers for obstruction of patents when accidental cross pollination due to winds, birds, and nature occur. Even further, Monsanto has also sometimes used VIRUSES in the strains of GMO seeds to kill off their fertility making it impossible for farmer's to harvest seed, making farmer's dependent upon Monsanto for crops.
