Ingredients GMOs Are Disguised As

Sweet White CornImage via Wikipedia
In this series to educate people on GMOs, we first talked about What GMOs Are in simple terms, then we talked about What Foods Have Been allowed to be Genetically Modified.  Now it is time to talk about what ingredients these GMOs are disguising themselves as IN our food.

Since the FDA has not enforced labeling of GMO products, it is important to know what ingredients GMOs are.  I have compiled this list of ingredients and it is overwhelming.  Just about everything that comes in a package (with few exceptions) has a GMO ingredient.

I was chatting last night with a friend about GMOs and she understood what GMOs were, but didn't grasp that this is a serious subject.  She firmly believes that things on the shelves are safe for her and her children to consume.

I know that there are others like my friend who have believed in our food system for so long that it is hard to see anything different.  All I ask of my friend and others with these long held beliefs, is to suspend judgment and read all the information you can find.  Being educated and understanding the process of GMOs (whether one believes them to be safe or unsafe) cannot hurt anyone, right?

How awful would it be for science to link GMOs with diabetes, cancers, kidney disease, and heart disease?  While there is evidence for suspicion, it has yet to be proved.  Suspicion is enough for me to choose differently.  What will evoke a change in your shopping habits?

Let's all make educated and conscientious decisions for ourselves and our families.  That is the purpose of this GMO series.

The good news about this list, is that there are USDA Organic sources for just about ALL of these ingredients.  Why can't manufacturers choose safe ingredients?  I'd rather pay more for safe foods, then less for foods that are not tested to be safe.

Look for the USDA Organic label.  USDA Organic labeling requires that NO GMOs can be used, even in trace amounts!

Do you find the list to be overwhelming?  Grab a box of cereal or granola bars (non-organic) and share with us the ingredients in your pantry that may be GMOs.

Since I have been living GMO aware and free for the past 6 months, my health has improved, arthritis has lessened, my kids' behavior has calmed, and We Don't EAT as much.
