So how do you know if your produce is genetically altered or if it comes from a real plant?
First, if it is labeled USDA Organic, it is not a GMO. USDA Organic guidelines state that NO Genetically Modified Organism may be used in USDA Organic labeled products.
The next thing you can do is look at the little sticker on the produce.
A 4 digit number code means that it is a traditionally grown vegetable or fruit.
A 5 digit number code that begins with a 9 means it is organic.
A 5 digit number code that begins with an 8 means it is a GMO.
I have recently come upon a lot of fruits and vegetables that are not labeled at all. I refrain from purchasing them, or I ask a store clerk if one is available.
By asking your store clerk to verify GMO free foods, you are making them aware of what you are looking for. Remember, all stores want to please their customer for repeat business! If enough customers speak up about GMOs and proper labeling, it could make a huge difference on an industry level!
